Ingrid Windram
Ingrid Windram was born in Adelaide, South Australia where she studied art for six years and then worked as a Professional Artist exhibiting in many Solo and Mixed Exhibitions from 1982-92, earning respect and recognition for her work. She then moved to the Kimberley Region in 1992, looking for new inspiration for Art and Life and found a completely different world.
Ingrid has travelled extensively throughout the Kimberley Region on field trips, setting up camp in area such as the Bungle Bungles, El Questro Station to access the many Gorges, and most places along the Gibb River road. This new landscape was so vibrant she often minimized the subject to focus on light and colour to capture its essence.
In 2004 and 2005 she was an invited Artist aboard the cruise ship True North, exploring the wilderness of the Kimberley Coast. These were amazing trips, that with the use of dingys and the helicopter she was able to explore an untouched landscape. The inspiration from these two trips was used in her 2007 exhibition, held at the Linton and Kay Gallery, Western Australia
To deepen her Artistic senses, Ingrid travelled to Italy, Poland, Latvia and France, between 2005
and 2009. This travel was embraced by her as she took in the Art and Culture of Europe which imparted an influence on her creativity as she brought home memories of Matisse, Monet, Botticelli and Van Gough, Artists she had studied at Art School.
November 2011 saw the opening of her latest Solo Exhibition “River Series and a little more”, which marked the beginning of new horizons for her.
In 2012, Ingrid received an invitation by Opera Under the Stars coordinators, to feature as the Artist for ‘Oper-Arte’ Art Exhibition and Auction to be presented in Broome in August to coincide with the event’s 20th Platinum Anniversary.
Her immense respect for Broome and the Kimberley Landscape was her inspiration along with some of the icons and history that shaped Broome.
It is a compelling body of work that expanded her Artistic boundaries
March 2013, Ingrid was invited by the Hawaiian Group to hold an Exhibition at the
Claremont Quarter which she accepted and titled the Exhibition “A Taste of the Kimberley”
Over her long career Ingrid has emerged as a very successful Artist with her paintings being represented in many Corporate and Private Collections throughout Australia and overseas.
Artist Statement
Light colour and texture live exuberantly in my artistic world.
Nature is the inspiration that I draw from, expanding on the elements to create the essence of the subject.
I set up my Studio in the Kimberley in 1992 and immersed myself in this vibrant landscape, captivated by the diversity of this Ancient Country with Red Escarpments, Wetlands and Boab trees
The mediums that I most like to work with are Acrylics on rag paper or canvas, and Charcoal for which I have a passion, as I find it an expressive medium that I like to use to extend the character or mood.
Acrylics offer me the opportunity to capture translucency in light at certain times of day and when I need texture to express an idea, they work well for me, offering a great range of vibrant colours.
I inherently seek to translate the essence of the landscape to my canvas.
